This whole debate has been fascinating since it is a wedge issue for both republicans and democrats. I don't even know where I stand on the issue except I'm somewhere in the middle. Oh, and Bush lauding his base to be "rational" about it rather than deporting millions of people was a riot too. (5/24/06)
In this instance, the President is looking out for his "hidden base" -- businesses which benefit from a cheap, surplus labor pool whether legal or illegal. I guess, only "guess", that it is a wedge issue for both Republicans and Democrats because a substantial majority of Americans regardless of party wants the flow controlled first and "amnesty", "guest worker", etc. worried about second.
