Personally, I have always liked Senator Byrd. When push comes to shove he comes out on the side of his constituency and his country.

This whole debate has been fascinating since it is a wedge issue for both republicans and democrats. I don't even know where I stand on the issue except I'm somewhere in the middle. Oh, and Bush lauding his base to be "rational" about it rather than deporting millions of people was a riot too. (5/24/06)

In this instance, the President is looking out for his "hidden base" -- businesses which benefit from a cheap, surplus labor pool whether legal or illegal. I guess, only "guess", that it is a wedge issue for both Republicans and Democrats because a substantial majority of Americans regardless of party wants the flow controlled first and "amnesty", "guest worker", etc. worried about second.
