Hmm. I have noticed before a difference in the relationships between sons-in-law vs. mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law vs. mothers-in-law. Maybe my theory does not work with daughters-in-law because wives invariably try to alter their mother-in-law's creation while husbands do not?

Why? All that does is encourage the woman to screw up her grandkids in the mistaken belief that she did everything right the first time around.
