September 20, 2006, 1:49 p.m., corner of Longcommon and Selborne: Big hole in the street entirely blocking the west-bound lane of Longcommon right at the intersection; traffic uncertain because no one is directing it; four village workers, one desultorily scraping at the hole with a shovel, two standing and watching him do it, one sitting at the edge of the hole with his hands around his knees watching him do it.
2:20 p.m.: One village worker leaning on his shovel, two standing and watching him do it, one sitting at the edge of the hole with his hands around his knees watching him do it. Traffic backed up and looking for a detour (me included).

Hey NK , This is your civil servants, hard at work. I suspected this happens all over the country, until I found PROOF, they have classes at the local community colleges, on how to stand, leaning on shovels and ballancing your self while naping.
Slowly down here counties are turning the work over to sub-contractors saving in Pention Funds, Insurance and etc. But What those lazy idiots dont get is that their work is now done by illegal alliens, which it now costs the county as much or more money because of free school and medical care. Catch 22.

Patterico may be Irish but he claims that his wife is one of the most beautiful women in the world which would make her a Spartan and a close relative of my mother's since the most beautiful women in the world come from Sparta and my mother is the most beautiful of all.
