Gene Wolfe's "Soldier of Sidon"

is very disappointing. To tell the truth, it sucks. It sucks independently, in and of itself, and not only in comparison to "Soldier of the Mist" which was excellent and "Soldier of Arete" which was very good. Too many women, too many gods, too much talk. Little more than a fictionalized essay on the Egyptian pantheon at the time of Xerxes with emphasis on temple prostitutes. No action except as a pointless, perfunctory afterthought. Actually, the whole book is pretty perfunctory. Even Latro has been made into a cardboard cutout penning an occasional platitude. Anyone who expects the excellence of "Knight" and "Wizard" will be sorely disappointed . It is a book better not having been written.
